Twin Turboprop
Is a King Air worth it?
Aircraft with a valid registration, counted live from the FAA file.
Two turbines, a cabin you can stand in on the bigger ones, and sixty years of continuous production behind the support network. The most capable thing most owner-pilots will ever fly themselves.
The King Air has been in continuous production for around sixty years, which has produced something no other aircraft in this class has: a support network that reaches everywhere, a deep pool of experienced mechanics, and a resale market that never goes quiet.
Older airframes are startlingly affordable relative to capability. A 1980s model can be had for a fraction of a new single-engine turboprop and carries more. What it will not do is cost less to run, and that gap is where owners get caught.
Single or twin turboprop?
The honest comparison. A modern single-engine turboprop is faster per dollar of fuel, cheaper to maintain, and statistically very safe — turbine engines fail rarely. A twin gives redundancy, more cabin, and often better hot-and-high performance.
The deciding question is the same one that runs through every step up on this site: what is actually limiting your flying? If it is payload and cabin, the twin answers it. If it is speed and range, the single usually answers it for less. If the answer is that two engines feel better over water at night, that is a legitimate reason and worth paying for — just be clear that it is the reason.

Fleet size is not trivia. It decides how fast you get a part, whether the shop at your field has seen one before, and how long the airplane sits when you sell.
