Light Sport (LSA)

Is a light sport aircraft worth buying?

On the US registry
3,856

Aircraft with a valid registration holding a light sport airworthiness certificate.

Modern airframes, modern panels, six to nine gallons an hour, and a route to flying that does not require a medical certificate in the usual way. Genuine limits, and a genuinely good answer for the right mission.

Light sport is the most misunderstood category in general aviation, usually dismissed as not a real airplane by people who have not flown a modern one. A current LSA typically has a glass panel, a modern engine burning four to six gallons an hour, a ballistic parachute on some models, and build quality that embarrasses a fifty-year-old spam can.

The trade is weight, and everything that follows from it. Two seats, modest baggage, and an airframe that gets moved around more by wind and turbulence than something heavier.

Where the real appeal sits

Two places. The first is running cost: at five gallons an hour, flying a hundred hours a year costs roughly what thirty hours costs in a Skylane. Owners of these types fly noticeably more than owners of bigger airplanes, and flying more is the entire point.

The second is the medical route. Sport pilot privileges allow a valid US driver’s licence to serve in place of a medical certificate, subject to conditions. For some pilots that is the difference between flying and not flying.

The rules here have moved, and may againThe definition of a light sport aircraft, what a sport pilot may fly, and the medical conditions attached have all been revised over the years and are under continuing review. Anything you are relying on should come from the current regulation and an instructor, not from any website — including this one.

Special versus experimental light sport

A factory-built LSA and a kit-built one carry different certificates, and the difference matters for maintenance. On the experimental version the builder can hold a repairman certificate for that specific aircraft, which changes who may sign off work. On a factory aircraft that is not available to you. Ask which you are buying, and what it means for your maintenance costs, before you commit.
