Should I buy a twin-engine piston airplane?

Two engines, roughly two and a half times the running cost, and a redundancy that only pays off for a pilot who trains for it. A shrinking category, for reasons worth understanding before you join it.
The light piston twin is a smaller market than it was, and understanding why is more useful than any spec comparison. Modern single-engine turboprops took the missions that used to demand two engines, and did it with turbine reliability and one engine to maintain.
What remains is a genuinely capable category at prices that look extraordinary next to a new single. A well-kept Baron or Seneca offers six seats, real payload, known ice on many, and 200 knots, for less than a new four-seat piston single. The catch is entirely in the running.
What the second engine actually buys
Not a guaranteed climb. A light piston twin with one engine failed, at weight, on a warm day, has very little climb performance and sometimes none. What the second engine reliably buys is options and time — the ability to keep flying toward an airport you choose rather than landing straight ahead.
That is worth a great deal over water, over mountains, or at night. It is worth much less over the Midwest in daylight, which is where most owner-pilots actually fly.
The costs that are not proportional
- Two engines to overhaul, two propellers, two of every accessory and AD
- Fuel burn commonly two to three times a comparable single
- Insurance substantially higher, with training conditions attached
- A bigger hangar, and higher handling fees at many fields
- An annual that takes longer and finds more, because there is more to find
Budget roughly two to three times a comparable single, all in. That is not an argument against the category — it is the price of what it does, and for the right mission it is money well spent.
The most common twin-engine piston flying today
Fleet size is not trivia. It decides how fast you get a part, whether the shop at your field has seen one before, and how long the airplane sits when you sell.
