The multi-engine rating
A short rating in hours, an expensive one per hour, and the one step up where proficiency is not optional. What the second engine really buys, and what it asks of you in return.

The multi-engine rating is a category and class rating, not an endorsement — there is a practical test at the end. It is also one of the shortest ratings in hours and one of the most expensive per hour, because you are flying a twin throughout.
Most people finish in somewhere between ten and fifteen hours, and spend six to twelve thousand dollars doing it. Almost all of that time goes on one subject.
What the training is really about
Engine-out handling. Very nearly the whole rating is about what happens when one engine stops, because that is the scenario the second engine creates and the one that determines whether it helps you.
The asymmetric thrust from one engine operating and one not produces a yawing and rolling moment that must be controlled with rudder, aileron and a specific configuration. Below a defined airspeed the rudder can no longer counteract it at full power on the good engine, and control is lost. Learning to recognise the failure, identify the correct engine, feather the correct propeller and maintain control is the rating.
The uncomfortable truth taught alongside it: a light piston twin with one engine failed has very little climb performance, sometimes effectively none at weight on a warm day. The second engine does not guarantee you will climb. What it reliably buys is options and time — the ability to keep flying toward somewhere you choose rather than landing straight ahead.
What a twin costs to own
Roughly double the powerplant side of everything, plus a step up in nearly every other line.
- Two engines to overhaul, two propellers, two sets of accessories, two of every AD
- Fuel burn often two to three times a comparable single
- Insurance substantially higher, with training conditions attached
- A larger hangar, and higher landing and handling fees at many fields
- An annual inspection that takes longer and costs more
A piston twin is roughly a two-to-three-times-the-single proposition on running costs. That is not an argument against it; it is the price of the capability, and for the right mission it is money well spent.
When a twin is genuinely the right answer
When you regularly fly over water, mountains or hostile terrain where a forced landing has no good outcome. When you need the payload and cabin that a big twin offers and a single cannot match. When you fly at night or in instrument conditions often enough that redundancy in the electrical and vacuum systems matters as much as the second engine. And when you will fly and train enough to stay genuinely proficient.
When it is not: when the reason is that two engines feel safer. For a pilot who flies fifty hours a year and trains to the minimum, the statistics do not support that intuition — the additional complexity and the demands of engine-out handling can outweigh the redundancy.
One more practical note: many pilots get the multi-engine rating without any intention of buying a twin, because it is a genuinely good piece of training and it opens doors professionally. That is a perfectly sound reason to do it, and it is a much smaller commitment than owning one.
