High-performance and complex endorsements

Two logbook signatures that open up most of the airplanes owners move up to — and two insurance conversations that are stricter than the regulation.

These are endorsements rather than ratings: training, signed off in your logbook by an instructor, with no test at the end. They gate characteristics of an aircraft rather than specific models.

High performance covers aircraft with an engine above a defined horsepower threshold. Complex covers aircraft with retractable landing gear, flaps and a controllable-pitch propeller together. Many aircraft owners step up to are one or the other; some are both.

What actually changes in the airplane

More power means more to manage. A high-performance single accelerates faster, climbs faster, and generates far more left-turning tendency on takeoff and go-around. Power changes need more anticipation, and a go-around at low speed with full power applied abruptly is a genuinely different event from the one you practised in a trainer.

A constant-speed propeller adds a lever and a way of thinking. Manifold pressure and RPM become two things you set rather than one, in a specific order, and getting the order wrong is hard on an engine. It is not difficult; it is just new, and it needs to become automatic.

Retractable gear adds a step you can forget. Gear-up landings are among the most common accidents in general aviation, they are almost never caused by mechanical failure, and they happen to experienced pilots on ordinary days. The defence is a rigid, unvarying checklist discipline — the same trigger points on every approach, every time, with a verification that is verbal and physical rather than mental.

Everything happens faster. A faster airplane arrives at the pattern, the descent point and the decision sooner. The workload increase in the last five minutes of a flight is where most of the difficulty actually sits.

What the training involves

The regulation asks for ground and flight training and a logbook endorsement, with no minimum hours specified. In practice most instructors want five to ten hours, and insurance usually wants more.

Expect to spend the time on: power management and the propeller, gear discipline, the airplane’s different speed and energy behaviour in the pattern, emergency procedures specific to the type, and enough landings that the sight picture is yours rather than borrowed.

The insurance requirement is the real requirementThe regulation sets a floor with no hour minimum. Your underwriter will set a number — commonly ten to twenty-five hours dual in type for a pilot new to the category, sometimes with a checkout by a named instructor, sometimes with recurrent training every year. Get this in writing before you buy the airplane, because it determines what you can actually fly and what it costs.

For an owner deciding whether to step up

The endorsements themselves are not the obstacle — they are a handful of hours and they make you a better pilot. The considerations that matter are downstream of them.

  • Retractable gear adds an inspection regime and a class of expensive maintenance
  • A constant-speed propeller has its own overhaul interval, in hours and in calendar years
  • Insurance costs more, sometimes considerably, particularly in the first year
  • The airplane is less forgiving of a pilot who flies thirty hours a year — currency matters more, not less
  • If the higher cost means you fly less, you have made yourself both poorer and less safe

That last point is worth sitting with. Plenty of owners have moved from a simple single to a complex, high-performance one and found that the combination of higher fixed costs and higher fuel burn quietly reduced their annual hours. A faster airplane flown forty hours a year is slower, in every way that matters, than a simple one flown a hundred.
