Avionics upgrades: what is worth doing

The upgrade that transforms how an airplane feels to fly, and the one most reliably over-spent on. What returns value, what returns capability, and what returns neither.

A panel upgrade is the most emotionally satisfying money an owner spends. It is also where the gap between capability gained and value added is widest, and the two are worth separating before you commit.

A rough rule that holds up: a well-chosen upgrade returns perhaps fifty to seventy per cent of its cost at resale, and a very expensive one in a modest airframe returns considerably less. You can easily put eighty thousand dollars of panel into a hundred-and-forty-thousand-dollar airplane, and the result is not a two-hundred-and-twenty-thousand-dollar airplane.

That is not an argument against upgrading. It is an argument for being clear which of the two things you are buying.

What is worth doing, in order

An engine monitor, first, every time. The cheapest item on the list and the one that returns the most. It shows you what each cylinder is doing, catches developing problems while they are cheap, and makes proper leaning possible — which saves fuel and extends engine life. Owners who fit one routinely describe it as the best money they spent on the airplane.

A modern autopilot, if the airplane flies IFR or long legs. Nothing else reduces workload as much, and workload is where single-pilot IFR goes wrong. A digital autopilot with envelope protection is a genuine safety upgrade rather than a convenience.

A digital attitude source, which removes the vacuum system from the critical path. Vacuum pump failure in cloud is a classic accident sequence, and eliminating it is a real risk reduction with a modest price tag.

A current IFR navigator, if you fly instruments. An obsolete or uncertified box is a limitation on where you can go and an active deduction at resale, because the next buyer will have to replace it.

They are not a substitute for certified equipment where certification is required — but for a VFR owner wondering whether they need a glass panel, the honest answer is often that they need a tablet and a mount.

What is usually not worth it

  • A full glass panel in an airframe worth less than about double the installation cost
  • Replacing equipment that works and is supported, because something newer exists
  • Anything from a manufacturer with shaky support — an unsupported box is a future removal job
  • A partial upgrade that leaves you with two philosophies in one panel, which is harder to fly than either
  • Upgrading immediately before selling, which reliably returns less than it cost

Practical advice on the job itself

Get at least two quotes, itemised, and read what is in each. Shops differ enormously in labour rate, in how they handle the panel cutout and wiring, and in how long they will have the airplane. Ask specifically how long it will be down, then assume longer — avionics jobs overrun routinely and an airplane in a shop for two months in the summer is a season lost.

Ask to see examples of their panel work in person. Wiring quality and panel finish vary hugely and both are visible. And insist on getting all the paperwork — the STC or field approval documentation, the weight and balance revision, and the updated equipment list. A future buyer will ask for it, and an upgrade without documentation is worth less than one with.

Do this before you spend, not afterWork out what the airplane is worth today, and what it would be worth with the upgrade. If the difference is much smaller than the cost — which it usually is — you are buying capability and enjoyment rather than value, and that is a perfectly good reason. Just make it a decision rather than a discovery.
